Founded in the 1614, Tirana is now a developed city which combines culture, history, contemporary architecture and lots of hospitality shown towards tourists. As you take a walk in Tirana you will enjoy the look of the colorful buildings, fancy coffees and green parks. It offers a mixture of some antique remains, Italian style architecture of the 20th century and communism buildings artistically repainted recently. This mixture combined with the mountains and sea close by and up to 300 sunny days per year, give Tirana a distinct Mediterranean feel in any season.
Departing to Shkodra
In the morning we drive to Shkodra the most important city of north Albania, set in a beautiful plateau in front of the largest lake in the Balkans named after the town itself, and with the Albanian Alps as a backdrop. We will take a walking tour in “Gjuhadol” a newly renovated pedestrian area of Italian and Austrian architectural influences, testimony to this city’s historic links with both these countries. Then we will visit the Marubi Museum (master photographer of the end of 19th century) which houses an exposition of old prints. He took the first photograph in the Balkans in 1856. Marubi was based in Shkodra but was also invited to work for the King of Montenegro. He has left a wealth of 500 000 glass negatives. The selection of prints we will view, show people and life of the area nearly 2 centuries ago. Shkodra is the only mentioned Illyrian capital in the 3rd-2nd centuries B.C. Visiting Rozafa castle we will not only experience the supremacy the Illyrians would have feel over their enemies standing in such an imposing Castle, but will also admire breathtaking views 360 degrees. After this photo opportunity we suggest lunch at an agro-tourism family restaurant between Shkodra and Lezha. We will taste some delicacies of this region such us pickles, local cheeses, bio olive oil, several kinds of bread etc. in their rustic form; the main specialty of the restaurant is young goats meat done in a very traditional way.
Around Tirana
After this culinary highlight proceed to Kruja centre of Albanian resistance against the Ottomans under our National Hero, Scanderbeg. He kept the Ottoman armies from crossing into Western Europe for 25 years, thus earning the title “Athleta Christi” awarded by the Pope of the time. We will visit the Skanderbeg Museum and a rich Ethnographic Museum with almost all items being original from the end of the 19th century. Finally we make our way through Kruja’s famous Bazaar full of traditional handicrafts and souvenirs. Return to Tirana. End of our service.
